We have started an exciting new initiative to help local families in need, by bringing together families at locations known as family hubs in the Borough of Wandsworth. This follows a successful ongoing partnership with Battersea Arts Centre, where the Centre’s The Bee’s Knees has provided a safe and welcoming place to bring together local families whom we support.
Now, with funds secured from The Big Lottery over the next three years, we plan to expand the initiative to other centres in the Wandsworth community, in order to reach as many families in need as possible.
The hubs allow parents to make new friends in the community, share experiences with one another and, most importantly, build confidence in parenting by meeting up regularly. These families may be struggling for a number of different reasons, e.g. isolation, post-natal illness, physical health problems, bereavement, disability, financial hardship and many other issues. The hubs provide a safe environment where we can continue to support them.
Our Chair Maria Kinsella, said: “We are delighted with the recent success of our weekly family hubs in The Bee’s Knees at the Battersea Arts Centre. Families and young children whom Home-Start Wandsworth supports have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited immensely from these groups.
“The much-loved Bee’s Knees provides a safe and welcoming environment for families to meet up and enrich their learning with classes such as cooking, budgeting, yoga and spoken English, whilst the children enjoy a bright and stimulating indoor space filled with activities and games.”
She continued: “We are now very excited to be able to extend the initiative further to more centres in the Wandsworth Community, with funding secured over the next three years from The Big Lottery. Here at Home-Start Wandsworth, we know how overwhelming family life can be, and we are here to help parents in our community support their families as best they can.”
Sophie Drury-Bradey, Battersea Arts Centre’s Senior Producer said: “Battersea Arts Centre is excited to be the first to host Home-Start Wandsworth’s weekly hub for families in our play space, The Bee’s Knees. We are working together to offer a safe, welcoming and creative space for families from all backgrounds to support each other through friendship and peer support.”
