Our Mission
We work with families to create an environment where young children can thrive.
Early Intervention
We believe that early intervention is the most effective support we can offer families. We follow Home-Start UK’s evidence-based model because the benefits are widely recognised.
Early childhood, the time from pregnancy to five, is fundamental in laying down the foundations for healthy development. During these critical years, children need nurturing and care from their parents and caregivers and a safe, happy and nurturing environment. The quality of the relationships that surround children and their experiences will determine their longer term outcomes. Exposure to stressors and adversity can impair a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social growth.
A key component of Home-Start Wandsworth’s support services is to provide preventative, early support, before problems escalate and families slip into crisis.
Helping families
Being a parent can be lonely and frustrating. All parents struggle at one time or another. For some the challenges can be especially over-whelming. Therefore, we provide practical and emotional support to families with children under the age of 5. We work with families who may be particularly struggling with:
- Isolation
- Poor mental/physical health
- Financial or housing worries
- Post natal depression
Every Home-Start volunteer is trained to work alongside families to give confidential support and friendship.

Our Founder
In 2007, Sue Winter established Home-Start Wandsworth. Familiar with the work of Home-Start in other London boroughs she saw the need for family support in Wandsworth.
After bringing up her own adopted children, Sue saw first hand the importance of early intervention in providing strong foundations for children.
Her vision became a reality in 2010 when the charity went ‘live’ and the first 10 volunteers were matched with families.
