“Every mother, including Black mums, deserve the right to have access to adequate support, care, safe spaces and for their voice to be heard.” – The Motherhood Group
This week we will be championing the work of The Motherhood Group, shining a light on the disparities in Maternal Mental Health for black mothers and raising awareness of the barriers and inadequacies faced by many.
Evidence shows that whilst black mothers are at increased risk of developing PND, they are less likely to seek support, or be offered ongoing treatment compared to their white counterparts.
The 2019 report from MBRACE-UK also shockingly highlighted that black women in the UK are five times more likely to die than white women during pregnancy and shortly after childbirth.
It’s time to prioritise Black Maternal Mental Health so that black women get the mental health and maternity care that they deserve.
