The Spirit of Christmas

The spirit of Christmas – what’s that all about?

Four words each December that get trotted out.

Is the Spirit of Christmas just Lidl’s mulled wine

Or the dodgy craft gin that you’ve ordered online?

Is it with Lady Hussey, who dropped a small bomb

Asking one British woman just where she was from?

With Harry Kane, did the spirit forget

To tell him the ball should end up in the net?

What does it mean?  Is it Hancock, M.P.,

Seeking forgiveness on national TV

By eating the rude bits that kangaroos use

Whenever they want to make more kangaroos?

It isn’t at every gas company’s board meeting

While people decide between heating and eating.

Perhaps it’s alive, and somewhere on a train –

Oh no! The train has been cancelled again!

But fear not – the Spirit’s  not given up the ghost

Somewhere, in a kitchen, it’s making the toast!

In homes where a mum and a kind volunteer

Can talk about problems and conquer their fear.

The Spirit of Christmas lives on in the heart

Of every person involved in Home-Start

Where families, friendship and futures all thrive

And thus keep the spirit of Christmas alive –

The Spirit of Christmas is fine.  It’s all right!

The Spirit of Christmas – The Spirit of Christmas –

The Spirit of Christmas is here – now – tonight!
